MacBook Air lands in the Philippines

Sizzling hot or just full of hot air?

Apple claims that it has the world’s thinnest notebook. And indeed it has. In fact, it’s not just thin, it’s ultra-thin.

The MacBook Air is simply thinnovative. Only 0.16 to 0.76 inch thick, it is almost as thin as the index finger. It measures 12.8 by 8.94 inches and weighs in at barely 3 pounds. Yet still, it has a 13.3-inch widescreen LED display and a sizeable, multi-touch trackpad. It also has a standard 2GB RAM and its battery lasts for a full five hours just like most Macs. Plus, it has built-in AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi wireless networking; IEEE 802.11a/b/g and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

But thinness has to come with a not-so-slim price, of course. The cheapest version comes at around Php 89,000-definitely not for people with lean pockets.

Aside from its hefty price tag, it only has an 80GB hard disk drive, though it comes with an optional 64GB solid state flash disk drive. In addition to that, it only comes with a standard Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 1.6 GHz and an optional 1.8 GHz.

It is so thin that it only has one DVI port, one USB port, and one audio port; it does not have a built-in optical drive and Ethernet and lacks firewire ports as well.

Its battery is non-user-replaceable by the way.

In the end, whether one must get hold of a MacBook Air or not is a question of form versus function, of beauty versus brains, of one’s needs versus one’s wants.

It is indeed super light-weight and its design is beyond compare. But then again, thinner is not always better. Or is it?
